The focus of kitchen design for 2017 remains on innovations that bring convenience, pleasure and comfort within our homes.
Blended open plan kitchen and living room spaces will endure as the preferred choice of homeowners; in turn this will drive continued demand for kitchen island designs. With many beautiful new options emerging, here we take a look at what else to expect for kitchen trends 2017…
Kitchen Trends 2017: On Trend Colours
…As usual, white kitchens lead the way overall, but neutral and muted kitchen colour tones will also populate design trends. As well as the emergence of new shades of grey, we are seeing more demand for off-white colours; this includes earthy neutrals such as Taupe and cashmere:
In contrast, an increasing desire for contemporary dark kitchens is also expected in kitchen trends for 2017! This might mean a dramatic black kitchen with a sophisticated edge; or else a slightly softer effect can be created through a deep and luxurious Blue Velvet gloss lacquer. In such dramatic designs the cabinetry becomes the focal point, making its own statement with little need for accessory:
Kitchen Trends 2017: Wood Grain Finishes
The desire for naturalness within the kitchen is still strong; as such we expect an increase of contemporary wood grain finishes. New wood kitchen finishes are increasingly stylish and minimal; their profiles more streamlined, and yet they still retain an innate warmth, ideal for the kitchen environment. The release of horizontal wood grains has also fuelled this modern wood kitchen trend, giving even more choice for kitchens in 2017:
Kitchen Trends 2017: Textured Surfaces
Wood kitchen finishes appeal for their rich grains; but textured surfaces in finishes such as stone and concrete also continue to be popular.
Metals have taken over interiors in a big way over the last year; From worktops, shelves, tiling to faucets and sinks; But now it is even apparent in furniture such as this beautiful bronze metallic finish.
Known as the ‘Moving kitchen’ for its shimmering metallic effect, it is available in Bronze, Gold or ‘Titan’; it is perfect for those who appreciate and want a striking material statement for their homes. At the same time, its richly textured surface is designed to withstand everyday wear and tear. Textured finishes such as this, as well as liquid metals and concrete effects, will be widely available for all areas of the kitchen in 2017. This brings new depth and a true sense of luxury:
Kitchen Trends 2017: Contrasting Colours & Layering Finishes
Textured surfaces will continue in popularity in kitchen trends 2017; but they aren’t just set to appear on their own! …Layers of contrasting finishes including rough with smooth, and hard with soft, will create plenty of visual interest within a kitchen space. For example, mixing countertop materials such as warm woods with cool surfaces will prove popular; so too will islands that stand out from the rest of the kitchen furniture in a two tone colour design (see below). Such arrangements also give way for on-trend accessory colours, particularly those that compliment neutrals such as soft pastels including lavender, rose, turquoise, mauve and lilac.
Kitchen Trends 2017: Simplifying the Traditional
Contemporary country-style kitchens have long been popular, with a focus on making the kitchen a desirable and inviting setting, complete with home comforts and conveniences. But increasingly, the intricate details of many traditional kitchens are being pared back in favour of more minimal and simplistic finishes. This creates a cleaner kitchen look and feel, and also draws attention to specific features such as islands, hoods or even the finish colour.
Kitchen Trends 2017: Flexibility, Choice and Convenience
Choice, convenience and ease of use is key to kitchen design in 2017, and will continue to influence homeowners purchase decisions. For example, engineered worktops are an increasingly popular choice over natural stone; this is because of their non-porous, and therefore low-maintenance nature.
In terms of appliances, we can expect steam ovens, integrated coffee makers, wine coolers, hot water taps, or even hands free taps, to continue to rise in popularity, as each of these luxury items is specifically designed to facilitate our everyday lives.
At LWK Kitchens (aside from finishes) we can now offer greater flexibility through a recent increase in our range of unit widths, depths and heights. This in turn gives designers more freedom and scope for tailoring kitchens to achieve the best possible design for the individual or user group. This is particular helpful when planning for small kitchen spaces. Similarly, increasingly streamlined door and appliance profiles, concealed appliances, and storage options such as multi-tiered drawers or larder units also offer greater design flexibility.
Kitchen Trends 2017: ‘Smart’ Kitchen Design
With smartphones dominating more of our everyday lives, it follows that kitchen technology has developed to incorporate their functionality. This is to the extent that many of our kitchen’s features can now be operated from this hand-held device; and we fully expect more people to take advantage of this in 2017!
For example, Siemens have released their ‘Home Connect’ app; This app can choose the best programme for your washing machine’s load, let you see in real-time what’s in your fridge (always handy when you’re in the supermarket and forgot to check), or even switch on and pre-heat the oven whilst you’re still at the shops. Smartphones can also offer kitchen users the benefit of sensor-activated lights, integrated charging stations, or even meat thermometers that alert your phone when your meat is ready.
