In part one we looked at furniture and appliance kitchen trends for 2016, and the expectation that open plan, multi-functional kitchens will continue to populate. In part two we will look at our expectations for the worktops, splashbacks, accessories and lighting which are set to be big for kitchens in 2016.
Kitchen Trends for 2016: Worktops
When it comes to worktops, many clients enquire about natural materials such as granite or marble. But advanced technology means there are now some beautiful and highly durable man-made alternatives such as quartz, Corian, porcelain and ceramics. These offer a greater consistency of colour and solidity.
These worktop options are also available in a wider range of colours, patterns and textures. This includes white quartz, which is much in demand because there is no pure white stone available in natural materials such as granite. The desire for tactile surfaces has also grown. For example, concrete worktops have become popular alongside grey and neutral kitchen colour tones, as well as the industrial kitchen style. Richly textured surfaces such as this are also extremely beneficial as any dirt or fingermarks won’t easily show, and they are effortless to wipe clean.
Yet alongside richly textured worktops such as this, kitchen trends for 2016 will also see demand for smooth and slim-line worktops. Whilst still highly durable, thin worktops emphasise a kitchen’s clean lines in minimalist kitchen styles. They also facilitate the growing trend for a continuation of worktop surface patterns and veins into splashbacks…
Kitchen Trends for 2016: Splashbacks
…Also encouraging this new trend for splashbacks is the emergence of porcelain tiled splashback sheets, which we expect to gain traction in 2016. Replicating the luxurious look of marble, natural wood, or concrete, these voluminous splashback sheets create the same stunning look as the real thing, but without the same expense of material or installation costs. These can also be book-matched for a seamless finish. Rich colours and intricate details are also appearing in splashback feature tiles; this includes timeless subway tiles, mosaics and geometric patterns. But, whilst these are becoming more prevalent, glass splashbacks will continue to dominate in kitchen trends for 2016, with bright accent colours bringing a contemporary look and making kitchens stand out:
Kitchen Trends for 2016: Accessories
Further to the colour and style of your furniture, worktop and splashback, the kitchen accessories you choose will largely impact on your finished kitchen’s look and feel. Similar to a lady choosing a hat or jewellery to complement a dress she is wearing, the choice and layering of kitchen accessories can not only reflect your personality, but will influence whether the overall look is warm, formal, casual, trendy or sophisticated; this is entirely dependent on what you hope to achieve.
Mixing metals and metallics
For kitchen accessories in 2016, blending warm metals and metallics will continue to be popular, including brushed steel, copper, perforated, hammered and shiny metals. This is particularly prevalent for door handles, extractors, pendant lighting (which can look stunning over an island), and even copper or brushed nickel kitchen taps are becoming more commonplace. The popular use of metal is a refreshing new take on what used to be thought of as an ‘old’ material to use. It is a stunning fit for the popular industrial kitchen theme, with dark matt furniture offsetting the metal’s shine…but increasingly homeowners are becoming more confident with their choices, and undertaking metals within softer and/or more colourful kitchen themes. For example, pastel colours such as dusty pink will easily accommodate warm metals, yet create a softer kitchen appearance, compared with darker tones.
Glass accents such as glass fronted doors, shelves and lighting will also feature. These bring a touch of elegance, along with a contemporary twist which lightens the space. Again, it is the layering of such contrasting materials that is so interesting within modern design and which can be used to stunning effect:
Kitchen trends 2016: Kitchen Lighting
Without the right lighting, whatever accompanying kitchen colours you choose might not look as you had hoped. You will also struggle with actual use of your kitchen. It is therefore essential to make sure the kitchen space is really well lit and you have light where you need it. LED lights will lead the way in kitchen trends for 2016, with ceiling downlights and undercabinet lighting primarily offering focused task lighting. At the same time, hidden light techniques will really lift the kitchen and living areas. For example, whilst ceilings are often overlooked in kitchen design, we are set to see ceilings with enhanced detail such as deeply coffered ceilings or lowered bulkheads. And the latter is often used to hide the electrical feed required for lighting systems.
Have fun with your lighting!
But of course whilst practical lighting is essential, you can also have fun with lighting options!…LED’s can prove effective in highlighting your kitchen’s features. For example, interior cabinet LED lights will highlight glass door fronts, illuminate a splashback feature, or else create a floating effect for islands.
And as with your surfaces and accessories, you can layer different lighting options. This can emphasise your kitchen’s finishes, and effect the kitchen ambience you desire. In addition to LED task lights you might achieve this through lantern style pendant lighting, chandeliers, oversized shades and light fixtures in bold colours. Such options can create a unique statement for your home, and are set to continue in popularity in kitchen trends for 2016.
It’s set to be a Beautiful 2016
To summarise, what you will probably have picked up as an overall theme in current kitchen design, is that people simply aren’t doing kitchens in one material anymore… it’s all about mixing it up! Whilst retaining focus on producing functional kitchens that meet user requirement, designers are layering, mixing and blending different materials to achieve ever more stunning and unique kitchen looks. With this as a major trend that’s set to stay, there is certain to be plenty of beautiful homes and kitchens in 2016…
