Kitchen Project Notes

The Challenge:

The previous kitchen consisted of an assortment of mismatched and worn wood base units, as well as frosted glass-front wall units; these were not securely fixed to the wall so appeared uneven and unstable. A lack of storage options meant pots and pans were generally stored on top of the wall units, but this made them difficult to access. The clients wished to rectify this within their new kitchen design, and also ensure plentiful worksurface space. In terms of the look they wanted something with a warm kitchen tone, modern but not too modern! They also wanted to include a kitchen island if possible.

The Design/Solution:

The previous kitchen had warm neutral tones, which was something the clients hoped to reintroduce within their new design. They liked the Cashmere satin lacquer kitchen finish for its ultra- smooth look and feel, but felt this would be too much throughout the entirety of the kitchen. To overcome this we introduced the light Platinum Oak Veneer finish for the kitchen island, creating a subtle contrast of tone and texture. The original ‘Pastel Violet’ glass colour they had chosen was also replaced with an Olive glass with amber undertones for extra warmth.

The Layout:

The large bay window was the room’s main entrance to the garden and primary source of light so for both reasons we wanted to leave this space clear. The previous kitchen had contained a dining table but where this had been located was perfect for a kitchen island, and would still allow sufficient seating space within the kitchen, including a 284 mm deep breakfast bar, ideal for this family of four. The back run of units together with the kitchen island together created a galley kitchen layout, and this was ideal for the social setting of a family home.

We designed the kitchen so that on entering the room you see the stylish kitchen island and bank of Cashmere wall units, whilst all of the main kitchen components such as sink, hob and extractor aren’t immediately apparent. In fact, they have been subtly integrated within the design to ensure an understated uncluttered kitchen look.

The Island:

The large kitchen island has clear access all around and is multipurpose. For cooking purposes it includes a Panoramic induction hob and downdraft extractor (the base units beneath have a reduced depth to accommodate this). The kitchen island also contains sockets beneath and an integrated undercounter freezer and dishwasher.

Kitchen Storage:

As a shortage of storage options was a problem within the previous kitchen it was a priority within this new design. The bank of Cashmere tall kitchen units contain a tandem pull-out larder, microwave, single oven and warming drawer beneath. The integrated larder fridge is located to the right of this. The base units on the main run contain a series of pan drawers, inclusive of a secret drawer and wooden cutlery insert, ensuring maximum storage potential for crockery, pots, pans, and cutlery. The pan drawer beneath the sink also has a waste separator bin system. Above the base units are lift up wall units for cups and glassware, and on the other side of the room there was still sufficient space for a coffee machine with warming drawer beneath, and pull-out larder next to it.

Client Verdict:

The client’s feedback was that we were very patient and accommodating whilst we tried out a number of different design layouts (well with such a spacious blank canvas there’s a lot of room for creativity!) but they were delighted with the final island kitchen layout.

They feel they now have a great kitchen, and in addition feel they got a lot more for their money than the equivalent kitchen from another German kitchen supplier (who I unfortunately cannot name!)
